Bluetooth Codecs, Explained Without the Jargon
SBC, AAC, aptX, LDAC — product pages throw these acronyms around like everyone knows what they mean. Here’s what actually matters when you’re choosing between them.
What a codec actually does
A Bluetooth codec compresses audio so it can be sent wirelessly from your phone to your headphones without eating all your bandwidth. Every pair of Bluetooth headphones supports SBC, since it’s required by the Bluetooth standard. Better codecs are optional extras that a device may or may not support — and both your phone and your headphones need to support the same one for it to matter.
The main options
- SBC — the baseline every device supports. Fine for casual listening, but the most prone to compression artifacts on complex audio.
- AAC — widely supported, especially strong on iPhones (Apple prioritizes it). Good quality-to-battery-life balance.
- aptX / aptX HD — common on Android devices, generally lower latency than SBC/AAC, useful for watching video without noticeable lip-sync delay.
- LDAC — Sony’s high-resolution codec, capable of the highest bitrates, but only supported on select Android devices and can use more battery.
Why matching devices matters
Codec support is a two-way handshake. A pair of headphones with LDAC support does nothing extra on an iPhone, because iOS doesn’t support LDAC — the connection simply falls back to AAC. Before choosing headphones based on a codec feature, check what your specific phone actually supports, not just what’s technically possible in general.
Does it actually matter for most people?
For casual listening — podcasts, calls, background music — the difference between codecs is often hard to notice, especially through smaller earbud drivers. It matters more for critical listening on capable headphones, and for latency-sensitive use like gaming or video editing.
